Hi all, got a phone call from Rick, he says he spilled coffee on his laptop and fried it, so he tries to check in here from the library, so I am emailing him the url for TRH so he can come here. I think he didn't want us to worry, if we didn't see him around, possibly for a couple of weeks. Ya can't drink coffee near or around laptops cause the chances of spilling it is too great. lol. He didn't want anyone to worry, he is okay. Just to let you all know whats up.

Rick is not alone at spilling into his laptop. I spilled diet soda into mine last week in a motel room. Dammit!
I turned it face down on the table as quick as I could (trying to prevent the liquid from hitting the main board) then immediately unplugged the notebook and pulled the battery. I grabbed towels and dabbed at the keyboard while it was still faced down ... and eventually turned it over as it dried.
Within another 10 minutes I was pretty certain I'd prevented seepage into the system's motherboard and thought I'd test it out. I plugged it in (not the battery yet) to test to see if I'd caused any damage to the keyboard. The best way to do that is to open either Notepad or WordPad and start typing all the keys. If you have unexpected results -- immediately unplug the unit because there is still liquid in the keyboard!!!
Your next course of action depends on what was spilled. If you spilled a sugary drink -- leave your unit face down and plan on getting it to a service tech before trying to fire it up again. If you spilled water, grab a hair dryer ... use a low warm setting and dry the keyboard (you are aiming for under the keys) for anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes. This technique will frequently work for diet sodas and coffee too, but any kind of sugar is bad, bad, bad, bad, bad inside a keyboard.
My keyboard and notebook was fine because I took the action that I did. How do I know these things? My business frequently services notebooks among the numerous other services we provide. Price tag for a new keyboard for your notebook -- installed? Anywhere from $100 to $150. Price tag for a new motherboard and keyboard? $250 up, depending on what can be salvaged. Rick took a serious hit. Yikes!

Now I use a bottle for my water or drink of whatever, with a cap on it. That way spills can't possibly happen. PS nice to see you alive and kickin', Chernobyl!

Belated Happy New Year to all! : ) I meant to say that earlier, but got carried away with saving the laptops of the world. It is nice to pop my head in here every now and again and see some interesting topics. Best wishes...

Hey, I finally got to sign in! OK...here's an update: My keyboard was ruined, but apparently nothing else is damaged. So, I'm waiting to get my computer back from "Moondog Multimedia," a repair shop I've trusted for years. It should be another week, and cost me around $100. At first, I could not boot up my computer, but after 2 days it worked fine, but several keys were ruined. Now I'm wondering if my keyboard would have been OK if I'd waited longer for it to completely dry.
Fortunately, I don't use sugar in my coffee as my bod can't handle it because of the gastric bypass. I use "Sweet & Low."
I took all the precautions Chernobyl suggested right away, including the hair dryer.
I've been able to view this board at the library, but for some reason I couldn't sign in up until today.
Not much time, so I'll post a couple of quick comments here on other subjects: Norm Coleman is holding a press conference in about an hour. I'm hoping he'll concede. He can tie that election up in the courts for months but the result won't change. Al Franken has won.
I personally favor Israeli carpet-bombing of Gaza so as to create a 25-mile buffer. They could give the population a 30-day notice to evacuate. They can't nuke it, because the political and actual fallout would be too great.
If Gaza city were removed, Hammas could no longer launch the rockets. We would do the same thing if drug cartels were lobbing rockets from Tijuana into San Diego and the Mexican government was unable or unwilling to act, so I don't see the problem.

Well, damn! Moondog Multimedia was supposed to have my computer fixed last night, but I was informed that Dell sent them the wrong one. It has to be exchanged, meaning I won't get my computer back for another week or two. I may be able to take it home, though, and use a cheap external keyboard whilst I'm waiting!

OK...I've got my computer home and it's working fine, but I have to use an external keyboard. It's a bit awkward, but I'm getting used to it. Since I plan to eventually have Moondog build a custom desktop computer, I invested in a really nice ergonomic keyboard that will be useful in the future, even if they are able to get me a new laptop keyboard that will work. In the meantime, I'm glad I no longer have to run to the library every morning!
