I grew up in LA, and one of the best weekend getaways dating back to the 1920's, and the 50's when I was young was Catalina Island. Catalina sits just "26 Miles Across the Sea," from LA, and from 1922 to 1976, the best way to get there was on the SS Catalina, the last of the great coastal steamers that now sits a rusting hulk in Ensenada Harbor. The great Catalina Gathering place was the Casino Ballroom, which was never a gambling place. Click on www.avalonball.com to see pictures of parties on Catalina, especially the Casino. The video you'll see on the main page has some great shots from 1935 of the "Great White Steamship" leaving Avalon Harbor as well. For years, I belonged to a club that tried to raise money to save the SS Catalina and bring her back to California, but the effort has been abandoned.

Rico, god it's like the French Riviera or something? I would love to go there! Who lives there now, and what do they use now to get there and back? >< Tomasina ChicaWolverina!

It's really easy to get to out of LA. Lots of boats out of Long Beach, and there are also helicopters. Used to be lots of seaplanes, but I don't think they fly them anymore. It's only 26 miles off the coast of LA. You may remember the old song, "26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me Santa Catalina The Island of Romance..." www.catalina.com/catalinahome.html
