As you guys know the movie opens this weekend. My wife has mixed feelings about seeing it because she saw or heard somewhere that Heath Ledger had a propensity to submerse himself so deeply in his characters that it took him some time to recover after each film. I believe she said that this was the reason for his difficulty in relationships.
Upon seeing the previews for this movie it is apparent to me that his portrayal of the Joker is very dark. I wonder if his possible inability to recover quickly from playing this character contributed to his death? I know he had a history of chemical and alcohol abuse and wonder if it was also directly related to his "becoming" the characters he portrayed then having difficulty returning to normal life, so to speak.
Any body else hear anything like this?
It also reminded me that she sometimes tells me that I bring my character home with me when I'm doing a play. Obviously nothing this drastic but it makes me wonder if she sees a parallel somehow.

Heath Ledger's death was due to a combination of the drugs he was taking, but from everything I've read, it seems to have been accidental. And, I think it should serve as a warning to doctors when they write perscriptions as well as to the general public about the general safety of mixing medications.
Did you like Jim Carrey's portrayal of Andy Kaufman in "Man on the Moon?" I'm told that Carrey immersed himself so thoroughly in character that if anyone had to talk to him on the phone or in person during shooting, he would respond to them as Kaufman, and then promise to pass the message on to Jim Carrey.
I guess this is a form of method acting, but something the great Lawrence Olivier was very contemptuous of. His attitude was always, "I'm an actor. Give me the lines you want me to do and I'll act the part."
