I was watching CNN and just saw Barack Obama make the statement that if we started offshore drilling today, not only would it take 7 years before we saw any oil, but it would not put a dent in prices, since any oil obtained would simply go on the world oil market and we'd be competing with China and India for the supply.
A little digging shows he's right.
So, my question would be whether there are newer safer technologies that can cut down on the risk of spills. Then, assuming it's true, why couldn't we simply pass a law stating that any oil obtained from offshore oil drilling can only be sold on the US market?

That would be a solution...too simple, to easy. LOL

That would be a solution...too simple, to easy. LOL Well, that wouldn't be good for your country, but I don't think Canada imports oil in any case. I'm pretty sure you sell us your oil!

Roland, I heard on a talk show the other night that the U.S. ships our oil out of the country to go on the world oil market. I've been trying to find information to validate this. Do we do that voluntarily as in an agreement because we are a oil importing country? (that was what was said on the program I was listening to) If not, did you find out why we do it in your research. As for safer technologies have you been seeing the commercials put out by T. Boone Pickens and his ideas? If so what do you think about it? A link to his plan here: www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/07/08/pickens.plan/index.html

Apparently all oil is traded on the International Market as part of commodities futures. Seems we export and then re-import our own oil if I understand it correctly. I guess if we didn't, then we wouldn't be able to import any. But I do believe that the technology exists to free us from it all. T. Boone Pickens was one of the bad guys in the past, but he seems to have developed a conscience. Also, for more exotic energy solutions I'm interested in Stephen Greer's "Disclosure Project." He may be a nut, but just maybe he's on to something. See www.disclosureproject.org/

Here's a very well-researched article posted on a Canadian Web Site about how oil is traded on the International Market. Note that the US is still one of the largest oil producers. What's interesting is that the largest is not Saudi Arabia, as most people would guess, but rather it's Russia! fuelfocus.nrcan.gc.ca/fact_sheets/oilmarket_e.cfm
