A year or two before this movie came out, I saw the play live at the Roxy theatre on Sunset Strip. Tim Curry did the role live on a very small stage that ran though the audience...so when he sang "Sweet Tranvestite," you had to worry that he'd do part of it sitting on your lap. This was in 1974, I think.
The only other actor in the movie that was also in the play I saw in LA was Meatloaf, who played Eddie. But on stage, he also played the professor in a duel role. Oh, and I think one of the girls who played the character "Columbia" was also in both the LA version of the play and in the movie.
Tim Curry actually originated the role in London on stage before taking the show to LA.

I was very fortunate to be in London at that time and saw it there. I spent a college term at Cambridge University. Tim curry must have already left the production as this would have been in the Jan-Mar of 1975. I'll never forget that trip as I saw 27 plays, operas, symphonies, etc. while there. Four of the most unforgettable were.....
Henry IV part's one and two and Henry V - Royal Shakespeare Co.
Albert Finney as Hamlet at the Old Vic (This one was sold out for every performance so I had to pester the techs behind the theater until they finally let me watch from the back).
Original production of Jebus Christ Superstar (3 times) and of course....
Rocky.....Tim Curry in that role makes even the most straight men think twice.....hehe
