Now that Hillary Clinton has been named as Obama's Secretary of State, it will be up to the Governor of New York to name a replacement for her in the Senate. There is some speculation that Bill Clinton will be that replacement.
If he accepted, he would only be the second Former President to go into the Senate. Can anyone name the first? It will be quite a shocker because of a bizarre coincidence.

Excellent question Rick......I'm going to throw out the name Adams but I can't remember if it was the father or son? I trust everyone had a nice Thanksgiving? Senator William Jefferson Clinton, eh? Boy that "Change" just keeps on coming doesn't it........

No, John Quincy Adams ran for the House after leaving the presidency and served about 20 years.
A Clinton Spokesman now says Bill doesn't want the seat. But if he changed his mind and took it, he'd be the 2nd US President to go to the Senate afterward. He shares one unique thing with the other former president who did it. That's a strong hint. No fair googling!

Hint: Bill Clinton was the 2nd President to...... ?? If taking the Senate, he would be the 2nd ex-President to do so, and would share the dubious distinction of the other 2nd thing with that other ex-President, who went to the Senate in 1875.

Jeez...I can't believe no one could answer this!
The only ex-President to go into the Senate after leaving office was Andrew Johnson in 1875 from Tennessee. He died after a few months in office. What he shared with Clinton, of course, was that he was impeached. He survived removal by one vote in the Senate. Clinton would have been only the 2nd President to enter the Senate, and was also the 2nd President to be impeached.
Anyway, it's now looking like Caroline Kennedy is the front-runner to replace Hillary in the Senate. She has already said she wants the job. If appointed, she would have to run to fill the last 2 years of Hillary's term in 2010, and again in 2012 if she wanted a full 6-year term.
