Oakland is a pretty scary place. In the summer months, many of the Oakland Street gangs come to Reno and cause problems downtown, especially during "Hot August Nights." I have to be constantly on my guard.

Makes one stop and think after reading this : Michael Richards is better known as Kramer from tv's Seinfeld series.
This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points. He said :
"I'm proud To Be White Someone finally said it. How many are actually paying attention to this ? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You Call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman' ... and that's OK.
But when I call you, Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner , Gook, or Chink ... You ca ll me a racist. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live ?
You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET. If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month , we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives we'd be racists. We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that ?
A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships you know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US . Yet if there were 'White colleges' THAT w ould be a racist college.
In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.
You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us.
But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist. I am proud. But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists ?"

I doubt that very much. Most black kids grow up with no father, something like 85%. In fact Obama recognises and has made mention of this very fact.

Obama? What does he have to do with a 22 year old black kid shot in cold blood in the back by a Bay area transit cop. How many atrocities do Americans have to endure before WE say no more? I suppose when they knock down your door, stick a gun in your kid's face, ransack your home, taser you for no good reason, maybe plant drugs to cover their mistake, and off you go to prison, your wife loses the kids, they take your property, and the kids end up in foster homes where they are abused. That kid that was shot had a family that loved him. We used to have laws in this country. We shall see how Obama fares in 2009. Remember, we did not create this mess, no matter what they tell us. THEY DID. Now, everybody roll over and play dead.

Sometimes cops snap....you know why....putting up with crap like those thugs who hang out in subways...
If your smart you don't put yourself in those situations...if your smart.
And what has Obama got to do with it? He had no daddy either, most blacks have no daddy because they play the welfare game. More kids more welfare. Such are the morels of black America. One cop shoots a black kid regretfully and you flip out but you overlook the cause and turn a blind eye to the number of black and Hispanic gangs that plague our county. Go figure. It times to realize that it takes two to conceive and two to bring up a balanced kid.
And as far as THEY, you are they. Don'T whine to me. I'M just sick and tired of people blaming everyone else but themselves. Now don't give me this shit that his family loved him. If they did he wouldn't be running the streets.

You should see the infections they bring their sweet little kids in with that they let get out of control! I want to see licenses for childbirth! Really though... ><Tomasina ChicaWolverina!

You are right, he deserved to die. My mistake. the gov loves the schisms between blacks whites and hispanics, moslems jews etc. as long as we are killing each other, we aint paying attention to them. what about the 1.5 million innocent deaths in Iraq. that aint small taters. sand niggers, they had daddies. well dude we aint royalty, the homeland security laws are now in place to protect them from us. we are their useless eaters too and now that they control everything, watch them pull out the rug at home. so while we are ignoring their atrocities against the lower class, which most of us are now in the process of joining(1.4 million jobs lost in Dec 2008 alone) these injustices are just beginning with the middle class as it shrinks into the lower class. Your kids will not know the 20th century except as dream of consumerism. Squirrel is already on the menu in England. Gmo crops, natural herbals outlawed, 1 in 3 with cancer in this country. 1 out of 75 boys with autism from mercury laden vaccinations, people dying from rampant tasering and 150k blackwater brownshirts about to be unleashed on our shores, 150 fema concentration camps waiting, waiting. the shooting of a black 22 year old isnt the issue. The crime of his shooting is. The racial bias is so so outdated. Lets move past the familial disfunction, over 50 % of white marriages end in divorce today. We got a bigger problem now. The death of America as we know it is now in progress. and watching 6-8 hours of digital tv is not the answer. disney land is gone. and the battle of stalingrad is just around the corner.

Excellent thread, such an important topic. All I know is, for my situation, I grew up without a father, (or mother for that matter, my grandparents raised me) and my sons also grew up without a father. I wanted to change what had happened to me, and not let it happen to my boys. But, it happened....
Now in Canada, they are forcing men to step up and take responsibility for their offspring. If they don't, they get fined. They have to pay a lot for child support now a days. And if they don't pony up and pay child support, they are fined, their licence to drive taken away, everything. Really enforcing it strictly here.
Gone are the days when a man can plant the seed and just walk away.
A friend of mine can barely survive now, and he is a Veteran, and all he has left to live on for the month is about 700 bucks, after the govt takes over half of his income away to pay for alimony or something like that. The reason I mention him is because he has a bad heart condition and lungs. He was in the hospital recently, with three heart attacks in a row. He needs $300 a month just for his meds, to keep him alive. A friend of his is paying for it, but that won't last forever. After the govt has taken most of his money away, he cannot afford the meds that he needs just to stay alive. He lost his insurance, he lost his drivers licence. He's almost lost everything because this witch that he used to be married to is taking him for everything he's got.
There are exeptions to the rule of enforcement, I would say, and in his case, it is a matter of humanity.
I know what it was like growing up without a father, and let me tell you, it fucks your head up real good. You grow up feeling unworthy of love, abandoned, like no one cares about you....so why should you care about yourself? You were not WORTH being there to see your child grow into the man or woman h/she would become. Very sad.
I think there needs to be inforcement of child support....but that's not where the buck ends. Beyond that, a child desparately NEEDS their parents in their lives, to show they care, even just being there makes all the difference in the world to that childs life.
Had I had a normal childhood, one with love and both parents gave a damn about me, I wouldn't have gone down the road I did, screwed up mentally, ended up a runaway, then in foster homes, then on the street, and no one showed me that I was worth anything, I had extremely low self confidance, and always yearned very much for my mother and father, and I didn't understand how they couldn't be there for me.
I felt like a throw away, a nothing, like my life didn't mean anything.
It was when I had sons of my own, that I started to grow up, and realize how much they were going to need me, even without a father, I had to play both roles, of mother and father.
I didn't know how to raise them, but did the best I could. All I knew was I was going to be there for them, no matter what. They are what gives my life meaning....
How can fathers walk away from their children, someone please tell me that. How can they?
But it happens all the time.

Before you blast me for putting this in the wrong section I would suggest that everyone go and see "Gran Torino" before it leaves the theaters. It is very apropos of this topic. Not to mention a great film.
I won't mention that Clint Eastwood may not have many more films left in him.

I can tell this is a sincere post and well said. Making dads pay is a good start. When family units break down our kids break down and loose their self esteem. This a cruel world. We cope but we don't run around saying the sky is falling. As regrettable as that subway shooting is and also the taser in Vancouver the cops have a thankless job. I for one am glad they are there and if one snapped because of frustration dealing with human garbage so be it. Its the law of averages. With 350 millian people in North America these odds are pretty good.

As bad as I've screwed things up in my own life, I guess I can be thankful I never had kids. I've seen too many men unable to even function because of the level of child support they are forced to pay.
It seems that there's no way to force men to be actively involved in their children's lives, so they enforce involvement the only way they can, which is financially. But the go way over the top with it.
It's a tough, sad, question. Emotionally, I have to agree with Chica. Perhaps there should be a mandatory license in order to permit childbirth. In real life, it'll never fly.
There can be no excuse for a stupid cop's rage in shooting someone on the ground who had already been apprehended. I can't imagine what his defense in court will be.
This can't excuse the punk rioting. I saw the clips and the smiles on the faces of the rioters who were simply victimizing their own people, bombing and destroying black-owned businesses. They didn't really care about the kid who was killed, they were just having fun, like the black kid who robbed me for peanuts and grinned from ear to ear as he was bashing me on the side of the head.

The "cop" who did the shooting was arrested the other day in Nevada, very close to me. He was actually a security guy working for BART. He was a former cop, actually already fired, so he had "issues."
