Just saw it last night, and it's far more than what the trailers would imply. It goes to the heart.
Clint Eastwood is about 82, and seems to have reached his pinacle in his old age. As a director, you would also love, "The Changeling."
See this...we probably won't have him around for much longer. In fact, there are elements to this movie that remind me of John Wayne's final movie, "The Shootist." It has me wondering if it's intended as Clint's farewell.

The trailers would have you believe it's an older version of "Dirty Harry," but that's far from the case. Clint plays an bitter old man who's icy exterior is melted by his persistent Laotion Hmong neighbors. He becomes their protector even though his original intent was to drive them away.
There are also elements to the movie that remind me of John Wayne's final film, "The Shootist." And, it makes me wonder if this is intended as Clint's farewell. See it and judge for yourself...I don't like to post spoilers, after all!

Well thanks for that at least, actually I love spoilers and one never stopped me from enjoying a movie. I can think of only one type of situation where someone telling me anything was a spoiler and that's if I'm watching with someone and they keep going on about what's about to happen NEXT! God that makes me want head toward the EXIT! But Rico, this is the place to talk about the film! Don't think we don't want to hear everything about it, we understand that it's a movie/story etc and we want to know what it's about and what you experienced! ><Tomasina ChicaWolverina!

Here's what struck me: I never thought John Wayne was a particularly good actor, but if you ever saw his final movie, "The Shootist," he plays an aging gunslinger who is dying of cancer, and decides to go out in a final blaze of glory.
Now, in "Gran Torino," Clint Eastwood's character, "Walt," is coughing up blood. They never do say what his illness is, but the only thing I know of that can cause that is Tuberculosis. But, he already played a character dying of tuberculosis in "Honky Tonk Man" in the 80's.
Anyway, the ending is very similar to "The Shootist." John Wayne did it as a farewell, since he was really dying of cancer.
