Just saw it. I didn't think it would ever come to Reno.
I think most of us here are old enough to have followed Watergate and the Nixon years in general. I watched all 4 of the David Frost Interviews that were broadcast in 90-Minute segments in 1977. It was fascinating to me at the time, being a staunch McGovernite, and it never would have occurred to me at the time that David Frost had bankrolled the production out of his own pocket and had such a difficult time getting any of the networks to air it. Had they refused, it would have financially ruined him.
Frost was not a journalist, as such. He was more of a variety show host, but maybe some of you will remember his first sojourn into American TV in 1962 or so on a news satire show called "That Was the Week That Was." That was where I first heard of him as a teenager.
The nuances from the adversarial nature of the interviews, and how Nixon actually turned Frost into a class act who learned on the job are beyond description.
Frank Langella really makes you believe he's Nixon. Some of the inflections aren't exactly correct, but you will quickly suspend disbelief. And as much as I admire Anthony Hopkins, his portrayal of Nixon pales in comparison with Langella's.
Michael Sheen does an excellent job as Frost. If you've seen "The Queen," he's the guy who played Tony Blair with much aplomb.
It's sad so few people care about history these days. I recently turned 60, and I was sad to see I was probably the youngest one in the audience, although I did talk to a 30-something couple the other night who highly recommended the movie to me.
